Reassurance for Parents
14.07.2009
NHS Gloucestershire is reassuring parents after the death of a 6 year old girl in London from swine flu.
Dr Shona Arora, Director of Public Health, said:
“It is very sad when a child dies but parents should not be unduly concerned. The vast majority of people, including children, who have been clinically diagnosed with swine flu have experienced mild symptoms.
“As we approach the summer holidays parents should encourage their children to continue maintaining good hygiene. Schools have been encouraging children to wash their hands and to follow the Catch It, Bin It, Kill It advice. Parents should continue with this while children are at home or on holiday.
“If you or your child experiences flu-like symptoms you should check you symptoms using the online flu checker at www.nhs.uk or by calling the National Swine Flu Information Line on 0800 1 513 513.
“If after checking your symptoms you think have swine flu, please stay at home and contact your GP by telephone. Your GP/NHS Direct will advise you if antivirals are required and where these can be collected from.
“If you are on holiday in the UK you should call NHS Direct on 0845 4647 instead of your GP. NHS Direct can advise what you should do in the area you are staying. Please do not go to a local A&E or MIU.”
NHS Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire County Council are closely working together in implementing the current national policy and advice regarding school. In line with Government guidance, schools closures are not necessary as we move from containment to treatment.
Dr Arora is advising people to adopt good hygiene practice as normal:
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue whenever possible
- Dispose of dirty tissues promptly and carefully – bag and bin them
- Maintain good hygiene – washing hands frequently with soap and water
- Clean hard surfaces (e.g. kitchen worktops, door handles) frequently, using a normal cleaning product
