PCT Welcomes Two New Members to Board Team

08/01/2008

Two local champions of health improvement have been appointed to the Gloucestershire Primary Care Trust (PCT) Board.

The Appointments Commission has confirmed the appointments of Chris Hickey and Rob Rees MBE, who took up their roles towards the end of 2007.

They will join the current Non-Executive Director Team, which is made up of local people drawn from the community served by the PCT. Chris and Rob both have a great deal of experience working across the county in different roles and will help to ensure that the organisation is accountable to the public and manages its resources effectively. They will also play a key role in overseeing the development of external relationships with local residents, patients, local government and other partner organisations.

Chair of the PCT, Ruth FitzJohn, said: “These appointments are of great benefit to the PCT and we are pleased to welcome them both. Chris will bring an important service user and carer perspective to the Board and this will be invaluable in our discussions and in shaping decisions.

“Rob’s experience at the top of his profession and his commitment to excellence will be very welcome and he will challenge the PCT to deliver the very best results.”

Chris is Chair of Carers Gloucestershire. He has 25 years expertise working in the voluntary and public sectors, both at national and local levels, and served as a Non-Executive Director and Vice Chair of the former Cheltenham and Tewkesbury PCT.

Chris Hickey said: “I am very pleased to be able to offer my experience and skills to support the PCT. The provision of healthcare in the county for patients and carers is extremely important and I welcome the opportunity to play a part. I also look forward to working to help the PCT become a better corporate citizen and progress its work on sustainability.”

Rob Rees MBE is well known in the county for ensuring our county’s produce is properly promoted locally, nationally and internationally. He is a former Board member of the Food Standards Agency and currently a member of the Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food, Board member and Trustee of the School Food Trust and independent Chair of the Kraft Health4Schools Project. He has a strong interest in health promotion, marketing and improving public health.

Rob Rees said: “I am looking forward to being involved in the health promotion and public health of Gloucestershire and working with the PCT to help bring about awareness among all age ranges.”

The PCT’s Non Executive Directors have strong connections into all six district and boroughs that make up Gloucestershire’s communities.

Together the Non Executive Directors bring initial interests in young people’s services, older people’s services, mental health, regeneration and the voluntary sector, change management and effective financial scrutiny that will benefit the PCT greatly.

Appointees are entitled to remuneration of £7,500 a year, which is the current rate for non-executive members of Primary Care Trusts.

The appointment has been made in accordance with the OCPA Code of Practice.

All Non-Executive appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Chris Hickey has declared that he has helped with elections for the Liberal Democrats. Rob Rees has declared no political activity but does hold an appointment to the England Marketing Advisory Board.
